AMBELIM: Midfielder Suraj Hadonkar scored the only goal of the match as Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim edged past Churchill Brothers Sports Club 1-0 in the GFA Goa Pro League match, at Government School ground, Ambelim on Monday.
With this win, Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim collected 14 points from eight matches while Churchill Brothers SC stay on 4 points from 7 matches.
SCC Cavelossim started the match on the front foot dominating the opening minutes of the game. In the 5th minute, attacking midfielder Suraj Hadonkar picked up the ball from his own half and moved towards rival penalty box and released powerful shot which was easily collected by the Churchill keeper Aliston Fernandes.
Churchill Brothers had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 7th minute but Nicholas Fernandes shot straight at the Cavelossim keeper Agnelo Gomes from the goal mouth.
After dominating the opening quarter, Cavelossim finally got the much deserved goal in the 19th minute when midfielder Rayman Fernandes sent in a perfect cross to Suraj Hadonkar who released a power-packed shot to beat the Churchill Bros keeper Aliston.
Cavelossim led 1-0 at break.
Post resumption, Churchill Bros got together as a team and pressed hard in search of the equaliser. In the 48th minute, Red Machines were awarded a direct free-kick just outside the box and captain Pankaj Sona’s effort was superbly saved by Cavelossim keeper Agnelo.
