PANJIM: Herald Group in Association with Sygenta India Pvt Ltd, Co-Sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and powered by Goa Football Development Council (GFDC), Goa’s most efficient society aimed at developing football in the State, is all set to organize the second edition of the ACF Trophy 2015 inter-collegiate football tournament aimed at promoting the beautiful game amongst college students.
The tournament will be held from October 9 to November 15. College students form a crucial part for the growth of football in the State and this makes this particular tournament even more important.
ACF Trophy is named after the former chairman of Herald Group of Companies, Late AC Fernandes who was a huge promoter of football having popularized the game through the pages of OHeraldO, and he strongly believed in youth development.
The ACF Trophy 2015 is an invitational tournament that will feature 16 of the best colleges from both, North and South Goa. Last year the tournament which formerly known as AC Fernandes Memorial Trophy received a huge response from the people of Goa as well as the colleges taking part. The players displayed a great level of determination and perseverance in the matches played and this year around they are raring to give it their very best.
Last year, Government College, Quepem won this prestigious trophy thus becoming the first team to win the tournament and the runners-up were Panjim-based Don Bosco College.
The tournament will be played at SAG ground, Quepem (South Goa) and Agassiam ground (North Goa). The 16 teams taking part in the tournament are as follows. Fr Agnel College, Pilar; Post Graduates of Goa University; Don Bosco College, Panjim; St Xavier’s College, Mapusa; DM’s College, Assagao; Dempo College, Althino-Panjim; Dhempe College, Mira Mar; Sridora Caculo College, Mapusa; Chowgule College, Borda-Margao; Damodar College, Margao; PCCE , Verna; Rosary College, Navelim; Government College, Quepem; MES College, Zuarinagar; Don Bosco Engineering College, Fatorda and BITS Pilani, Vasco.
The tournament also supported by Quadros Group, Michael Lobo and Victor Gonsalves.
For the first time a professional set-up is being created mainly to provide youngsters an opportunity to prove themselves and create a mark in the ever growing scenario of Goan football. This tournament is a stepping stone to the numerous youngsters from all over Goa and the Herald Group would like the people of Goa to be a part of this tournament by turning up in large numbers and supporting the future stars of Goan footballers.
