MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Joao Fernandes helped United Boys of Dando-Colva to overcome Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda 3-2 and romp into the quarter-finals of All-Goa Dando Boys inter-village football tournament organized by Dando Boys Club, Benaulim at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim, Wednesday. The teams were tied 2-2 at half time.
Both teams took the field with only nine players in the opening session. Don Bosco Oratory broke the deadlock in the early moments of the game when Clencio Pinto slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stunned by the setback, United Boys of Dando regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp. Their efforts bore fruit when striker Jovisco Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Spurred by the equalizer, United Boys of Dando intensified their forays and made it 2-1 when Joao Fernandes picked up the ball from Jovisco Fernandes and shot past the rival goalkeeper. Stunned by the deficit, Don Bosco Oratory restored parity when Danny Dias beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Crossing over, United Boys of Dando settled into their rhythm and gave the Fatorda defence a torrid time. After a couple of misses, United Boys of Dando struck the match-winner in the dying minute when Joao Fernandes received a through pass from Jovisco Fernandes and the former unleashed a blistering shot which beat the rival goalkeeper hands down.
Don Bosco Oratory went all-out but failed to get past the rival defence.
