Holders United Nerul Sports Club cruised into the quarter-finals of 37th Bandodkar memorial soccer defeating Betalbatim Sporting via the penalty shoot out 4-3 at MPT ground, here on Saturday.
There was no score at the end of the regulation time.
In the penalty shoot out, United Nerul scored through Benit D’Souza, Agnelo Lobo, Avinash Pereira and Neuroton Pereira while Charles Pereira’s strike was saved by Jeremy Fernandes, Betalbatim goalkeeper.
For Betalbatim Sporting, Luis Rogtao, Joe Fernandes and Desmond Fernandes were successful with their tries while Denzyl Rogtao shot over and Luis Rogtao’s kick was saved by Henson D’Sa, Nerul goalkeeper.
The first half was a midfield battle with no major moves from both teams.
During the second half, Clemente Xavier’s header towards the goal was punched over for a corner kick in the nick of time by Betalbatim’s Jeremy Fernandes in the 36th minute. Two minutes later, Pankaj Fondekar blasted over from top of the box after being fed by Charles Pereira and in the 42nd minute, Sydan Monteiro shot wide from close.
Betalbatim defenders Malcolm Fernandes, Franzie Rogtao and Bradley Rogtao contained the Nerul attacks during the later part of the second half as forwards Desmond Fernandes, Nigel Falcao missed to capitalize on the opportunities they got in front of the goal during the last ten minutes.
Pankaj Fondekar was declared man-of-the match and was handed the prize by Salam Shaikh of Vasco.
