MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Maclino Mascarenhas enabled Varca Sports Club rally from behind to defeat St Sebastian Union Club, Benaulim 3-1 in the Salcete Zone Group G GFA Third Division League at Holy Trinity Ground, Benaulim, on Thursday. Varca led 2-1 at half time.
Varca Sports Club dominated the game. However, it was St Sebastian Union who rocked the rival citadel in the 6th minute when striker Greto Rebello netted home giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper.
Stung by that setback, Varca intensified their attacks and Jaison Fernandes cancelled the lead with a stiff grounder. Spurred by the equalizer, Varca piled on the pressure with their forwards unleashing sorties against the rival goal. Maclino Mascarenhas punted the ball to the far corner of the net to give his team 2-1 cushion in the 33rd minute.
Varca continued to enjoy the better share of exchanges and Maclino Mascarenhas sealed the rival fate late in the second half to register his brace.
In Group E at Nagoa ground, Pax of Nagoa Sports Club stunned Verna Sports Club 1-0. Myron Fernandes scored the all-important goal.
In Group A, at Paroda ground, Deao Sports Club rallied from behind to hold Uguem Rising Club 2-2. There was no score at half time.
The teams started the game on a cautious note, especially in the opening session. Crossing over, the teams adopted aggressive approach and Rising Club’s breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when striker Anil Gaonkar beat the rival goalkeeper with neat placement.
The goal boosted the morale of Rising players as they upped their ante and in the 72nd minute Milfred Dias inflated the tally. Down by double blows, Deao Sports Club went all out and in the 81st minute Pranoy Fernandes reduced the deficit. Dolly Olveira restored parity in the 86th minute.
