Vasco SC pip Calangute Assn

A costly own-goal blunder from Nicolau in the 16th minute give the Port Towners victory

MAPUSA: Vasco Sports Club scored a solitary goal win over Calangute Association Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match organised by GFA, at Duler Stadium here on Saturday.
The match which was fought on equal footing which was decided by a self goal from Calangute’s Nicolau Colaco in the 16th minute to give full points to the Port Towners.
However, both the teams need to thank their keepers who came with fine saves throughout the match to keep the score-line 1-0.
Calangute started the match brightly and nearly went ahead in the 10th minute, when the Vasco keeper Sanju Thappa made a mess off Dominic Fernandes free-kick but before Franky Oliveira could pounce on the loose ball it was cleared by the defender.
The Vasco keeper Sanju came up with a smart save two minutes later stopping Calangute’s Franky well struck grounder in finding the net.
Vasco who were on the back foot got a lucky breakthrough in the 16th minute when Calangute’s Nicolau Colaco’s head pass from a long ball by Moises D`Sa landed into his own goal giving no chance to the advancing keeper Savio Paes to make it 1-0.
Calangute’s Jason Lucas squandered a golden chance in getting his team on level terms minutes before half time when he found his shot from close range go over the crossbar after being beautifully set up by Sachidanand Satelkar.
Vasco began the second session with more urgency and three minutes into the second half, Schubert’s power-packed right footer was acrobatically tipped over the crosspiece by keeper Savio who once again denied Aman Goverkar in finding the net with a well directed header off a corner kick taken by Minesh.
Calangute backed by a strong home support went all out in search for the equaliser in the final ten minutes but found it difficult to get past the Vasco keeper Sanju who kept out Franky Oliveira and Jason Lucas’ strikes in finding the net.
Vasco’s Schubert and Beneston too found a brick off a wall in front of them in the form of the Calangute keeper Savio who brought up two saves in quick succession.
