MARGAO: Verna Sports Club trounced SCC Loutolim 3-0 in the final of late Joao Francisco Pacheco Football tournament, organized by Betalbatim Sports Club, at Betalbatim ground, on Sunday. There was no score at half time.
In the first half, the teams tried to score but their strikers failed.
In the 14th minute, Verna SC had a go through Savio Fernandes but his move was foiled by the defence of Loutolim.
Thereafter, in the 21st minute, Loutolim attacked through Florian Dias’ shot was blocked by defence of Verna SC.
Post resumption, Verna SC dominated and scored in the 40th minute through Savio Fernandes’
rasping shot off an assist by Frazier Fernandes.
Soon, Verna SC made it 2-0 in the 46th minute through Frazier Fernandes’ deft placement off a cross by Preston and Santan Rego scored the third goal through a grounder off an assist by Savio.
Fr Jose Antonio Costa, parish priest of Our Lady of Hope church, Chinchinim was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Fr Diogo Fernandes, Viola Pacheco, Fr Milagres Fernandes and other dignitaries.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while the runners-up were awarded Rs 30,000 and a trophy.
Individual prizes were awarded to the following. Best midfielder of the final: Frazier Fernandes (Verna SC). Best defender of the final: Florian Dias (SCC Loutolim). Best forward: Santan Rego (Verna SC). Best goalkeeper: Preston (Verna SC). First scorer: Savio Fernandes (Verna SC). Best discipline team trophy: Panchawadi United. Jose Pereira welcomed. Joaquim Faleiro compered while Melwyn Cota proposed the vote of thanks.
