RAIA: Verna Sports Club emerged champions of the 16th Super Soccer tournament, securing victory in a thrilling tie-breaker against Davorlim Sports Club in the final, held at the Dando Ground, in Benaulim, organised by the United Club, Benaulim.
The match concluded with Verna triumphing in a tense 5-4 tie-breaker, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the game. The early stages of the match were characterised by caution, with both teams meticulously assessing each other’s strengths and tactical approach. However, as the game progressed, Verna gradually asserted their dominance, led by the dynamic duo of Andrus John and Ajay Satardekar, who spearheaded their formidable attack.
After halftime, Davorlim showcased their resilience, particularly through the outstanding performances of midfielders Adarsh Raj and William Niasso. Regrettably, their forward line failed to capitalize on their efforts, leaving them struggling in the offensive department.
The final ten minutes of regulation time witnessed an intense battle for possession, with neither side willing to concede the pivotal opening goal. This deadlock ultimately set the stage for the dramatic tie-breaker.
During the tie-breaker, Verna’s Andrus John, Noel D’Silva, Nevil Menezes, Salvador Gama, and Hilton Pereira demonstrated nerves of steel by successfully converting their spot-kicks. On the opposing side, Davorlim found luck with the precise spot-kicks of William Niasso, Adarsh Raj, Royson Colaco, and Jovito Niasso.
Savio Alemao was the chief guest at the final. Also present were Father Eremito Coutinho, Xavier Pereira, Glyda Rodrigues, and Manoj Kesarkar, along with local panchas Anthony Pango, Anthony Fernandes and Andrew Ferrao.
Verna Sports Club walked away with a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the trophy, while Davorlim Sports Club had to settled for Rs 40,000 and a trophy.
