Wilred Leisure emerge champs

The teams were tied 1-1 in the regulation period but it was Wilred Leisure that kept their cool in the ensuing tie-breaker which ended 5-4 to troop out worthy winners

MARGAO: Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim prevailed over hosts Navelim Sporting Club 5-4 via the tie-breaker to inscribe their name on the glittering 33rd Gold Silver Rolling Trophy all-Goa inter-village football tournament, organized by Navelim Sporting Club, at Rosary ground, Navelim, Saturday. Wilred Leisure Sports Club led 1-0 at the breather.
Both the teams started the game on an aggressive approach and kept the crowds on their toes. 
Both had equal number of chances. As the match progressed, Wilred Leisure Sports Club stamped their authority in the early moments and in form striker Milgares Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish, 1-0.
Stung by the setback, Navelim Sporting Club regrouped quickly and instantly took the fight to the rival camp. Former Flaming Oranje medio Wilton Gomes controlled the waistline with aplomb and kept his forwards busy with a good passes.
Gomes came close in cancelling the lead but his left-footed drive missed the mark narrowly. Navelim Sporting Club nearly fetched the equalizer but Clinton Niasso’s feeble push went straight into the safe hands of Curtorim goalkeeper Johnosn Bhagat.
Changing ends, Navelim Sporting Club started off in an attacking mode and nearly found the equalizer but striker Alvito Colaco headed wide after Clinton Niasso sent a floater from the flanks.
Navelim Sporting Club’s equalizer came late in the second half when midfielder Gomes was pushed by rival defender inside the rival penalty area and referee Sharad Naik without hesitation awarded the spot kick. Avelon Gomes send the rival goalkeeper in the wrong way in the resultant spot kick.
Stunned by the equalizer, Wilred Leisure Sports Club came back with determination and nearly found the match-winner but striker Milagres Fernandes rasping shot deflect from rival defender.
With time running out, Navelim Sporting Club went all out but rival defenders were alert in frustrating the attacks.
In the penalty shoot-out, Bruno Fernandes, Neville Fernandes, Joaquim Carvalho and Stefan Fernandes were on target for Wilred Leisure Sports Club while Avelon Gomes, Wilton Gomes and Clinton Niasso converted for Navelim Sporting Club.
Wilred Leisure Sports Club were richer by Rs 40,000 and a glittering trophy while hosts Navelim Sporting Club had to settle for Rs 30,000.
The following individual prizes were awarded to Best disciplined team Chandor Club, Best goalkeeper of the final Johnson Bhagat of Wilred Leisure SC, Best defender of the final Bruno Fernandes of Wilred Leisure SC, Best midfielder of the final Peter Pereira of Wilred Leisure SC, Best forward of the final Avelon Gomes of Navelim Sporting Club, Best player of the final Clinton Niasso of Navelim Sporting Club, Promising player of the tournament Benistern Pereira of Verna SC, First goal of the final Milagres Fernandes of Wilred Leisure Sports Club and farwell goal of the final Stefan Fernnades of Wilred Leisure SC.
Luizinho Faleiro, President of Goa State Pradesh Congress and ex-Chief Minister was the chief guest. Fr Jose Roque Gonsalves, parish priest of Rosary church presided.
Faleiro handed over the winners trophy while Fr Gonsalves presented the runners-up trophy in the presence of guest of honour Schubert Furtado, vice-president of GFA South Goa; special invitees Navelim Sarpanch Frank Fernandes, Telualim Sarpanch Duarte Pires, GFA Executive members Anthony Pango, Bishuit Themudo, Anthony Leo Fernandes, Arnaldo Costa and John Silva.
Earlier, Santosh R Naik, president of Navelim Sporting Club welcomed. Frankie Pires, general secretary proposed the vote of thanks .In all 16 teams participated.
