RAIA: Wilred Leisure Sports Club brushed aside Fr Agnelo YSC, Paroda, 6-5 via tie-breaker to storm into the final of 19th All-Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club, at Chandor Church sports complex, on Saturday.
Wilred Leisure SC began the proceedings with forwards Nalister and Willy Anslem working in tandem and creating chances. Wilred Leisure SC’s relentless pressure paid off as early in the 8th minute when Jovel Martins sent a floated ball over the Fr Agnelo YSC defence where Anslem timed his run to perfection and coolly placed the ball in the top corner to give Wilred Leisure SC the lead.
Wilred Leisure SC almost doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Aliston on seeing the rival goalkeeper out of position took a snap shot from top of the 18-yard box only to see his try hit the crossbar and go out of play.
Fr Agnelo YSC slowly got their act together with Godwin taking charge of the midfield and Benzu steadying their defence. In the 22nd minute, Godwin was rewarded for his efforts when he hoodwinked Wilred Leisure SC’s defender Versly Paes and let go a powerful strike to find the back of the net and restore parity. Thereafter play was confined to the midfield.
Changing ends, Fr Agnelo YSC came out stronger with Godwin marshalling the midfield and spraying passes to his forwards. The Fr Agnelo YSC mostly resorted to long range shooting hoping to get a goal but Johnson Bogota in the Wilred Leisure SC goal was alert and denied any scoring opportunities.
Both teams missed couple of chances to take the lead due to poor finishing by their forwards. In the final 10 minutes, both teams not willing to concede goals slowed the tempo of the match. The match thus ended 1-1 at regulation time. In the resultant tie-breaker, Wilred Leisure SC proved to be the better shooters.
