BENAULIM: Young Strikers, Benaulim downed St Rock’s, Majorda 1-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the 33rd Strikers Trophy football tournament organised by Young Strikers Benaulim, at St John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday.
After a dull start the match gathered momentum in the 18th minute when Benaulim got an opportunity but winger Merwyn Alonso fumbled with the chance.
After resumption, Majorda enjoyed better possession but Mathew Colaco and Wendel Coelho couldn’t find their way past Swisforn Silva.
Benaulim sustained the pressure and notched the winner in the 61st minute when substitutes winger Aliston Fernandes and medio Arfen Correia combined superbly with the latter finding the net with a low drive past Fane Fernandes in the Majorda goal.
After the goal, the Benaulim defenders Grayfan Popu, Caven Ratos, Rody Fernandes and Josburn Fernandes defended the slender lead.
