PANJIM: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has moved a proposal to extend the benefit of 50% road tax reduction for new vehicles till January 18, next year.
The govt on September 17 had promulgated an ordinance to slash road tax by 50 per cent for new vehicles, registered in the State till December 31. The move was aimed at giving a boost to auto sales in the State.
Speaking to the media Godinho said the final decision will be taken by the Cabinet and that reduction in road tax helped increase vehicle sales in November and December. “I have just moved the proposal. The final decision will be taken by the Cabinet,” he said.
As per the Ordinance, two-wheelers and three-wheelers costing up to Rs 1.5 lakhs, currently taxed 9% of the vehicle cost, will be charged 4.5%.
For two-wheelers above Rs 1.5 lakh up to Rs 3 lakh, the tax has been reduced to 6% from the existing 12%. For vehicles above Rs 3 lakh, the tax would be 7.5% as against 15%.
For four-wheelers belonging to individuals, costing up to Rs 6 lakh, the tax would be 4.5% as against 9%, while from Rs 6 lakh up to Rs 15 lakh, the tax will be 5.5% as against 11%.
Vehicles between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 35 lakh will be charged 6.5% while the vehicles above Rs 35 lakh will have to shell out 7% tax as against 14%.
