Says Matanhy was opposed to it

MARGAO: Independent MLA Vijai Sardessai slammed Environment Minister Alina Saldanha Saturday, asserting the MLA from Cortalim is yet to oppose the construction of the new airport at Mopa.
“I was surprised to read in the newspapers Alina’s claim that Navy is illegally occupying Dabolim airport. She is always saying that Dabolim was also meant for civilian operations, but she is silent on her stand on Mopa airport,” he told the media.
Sardesai recalled late Matanhy Saldanha had vehemently opposed the construction of the new airport at Mopa, but lamented that Alina has not come out openly to oppose the proposed airport. “If she is convinced that the Navy could be shifted out of Dabolim, let her Chief Minister take up the issue,” he said, while demanding that Alina should come out and oppose the Mopa airport. Referring to the advertisements released by the government welcoming the BJP delegates, Sardesai said the government has set a bad precedent.
