Panjim police recover gold worth Rs 14 lakh

PANJIM: Panjim police recovered gold worth Rs 14 lakh that Congressman Mathew Smith swindled from a local goldsmith. They acted on information given by Smith himself during interrogation.

“From what he revealed, we found the goldsmith from whom he bought the gold ornaments and coins,” said an official. “We recovered 610 grams of gold, but another 10 grams is still missing. Still, out of that Rs 17 lakh worth of gold, Rs 14 lakh worth is in our possession.” Smith, the former secretary of the Congress party in Goa, bought the gold from a jewellery store owner after citing his high profile contacts in the Congress. The goldsmith discovered the fraud and lodged a complaint when both of Smith’s cheques bounced.
Smith, presently in police custody, has reportedly confessed to the crime, which may not be his first. Mumbai police will arrive in Goa on Monday to take his custody.
