Agenda for session is election of Speaker; Patnekar frontrunner for post, Shirodkar also in the running

PANJIM: As earlier announced by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Goa Governor Dr Mridula Sinha has summoned a one-day session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on June 4.
A notification issued by Raj Bhavan says, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I, Mridula Sinha, Governor of Goa, hereby summon the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goa, to meet at Assembly Hall on 4th June, 2019 at 11.30am.”
Sawant had informed mediapersons that the only agenda for the session would be election of new Speaker.
Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar is said to be the front-runner for the post. The name of newly-elected Shiroda MLA Subash Shirodkar is also making rounds.
The BJP will nominate their candisate for the post on Monday. Looking at the numbers the Opposition Congress isn’t expected to field a candidate. The ruling coalition has 24 MLAs, including MGP that is yet to withdraw its support, while the Opposition is at 16.
The post of Speaker fell vacant after Sawant resigned to take over as CM.
