PANJIM: NGO GOACAN will organise Consumer Rights and Responsibilities Awareness this month as part of its ongoing Consumer Literacy Campaign on the theme “Consume With Care”.
During the fortnight long drive, GOACAN volunteers will hold awareness actions, lead delegations and submit memorandums to government departments, participate in enforcement raids, attend official meetings, conduct surprise checks as well as organise customer outreach programmes.
The awareness drive that seeks to remind consumers to assert their rights and assume their responsibilities on purchase of goods and services will end on December 24, being the National Consumer Rights Day.
GOACAN Co-Ordinator Roland Martins said that activities during the fortnight will cover rights of the consumers under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules 1977, the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and the BIS Act 2016. “Safety and quality standards for products and services will be another focus of the awareness drive wherein consumers will be alerted about the fire safety norms for LPG cylinders and electrical appliances which must have the ISI mark. Special efforts will be made to alert consumers purchasing milk, edible oils and packaged drinking water to acquaint themselves with the Packaged Commodities Rules and guidelines of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) with regards to possible labeling violations,” he said.
Issues revolving around fair price shops, post offices, banks, mobile and landline telephones among other issues will also be discussed.
