MARGAO: Environment Minister Alina Saldanha on Tuesday subscribed to the stand of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) that capping of Sonsodo was not a solution to Margao’s waste problem.
“Capping is not a solution to the waste problem. Instead, look at segregation for a long-term solution,” she said, after GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the city would loose precious land if capping was done at the site.
He pointed out that Fomento Green has planned a land fill site for the disposal of rejects from the waste treatment plant which will take care of the next five years. “We don’t know what would be the situation after five years. And if the existing waste site is capped, you very well know what would happen here,” he said. There was talk of lifting away plastic waste from the site.
