VASCO: The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has come up with a multilingual comic book for school children to help them understand Polar Science and its research activities in a lucid and attractive manner.
“We are doing a lot of complicated research work, which is not easy for the common people to comprehend. We realised that there is no literature available that would make them understand the work we are doing. Comic books are a very good medium for reaching out to the masses, especially the youngsters. The idea for it came up from the students,” Director, NCPOR Dr Thamban Meloth told O Heraldo.
The comic book titled ‘Polar Sciences – A Peek into NCPOR’ was released on Wednesday as part of NCPOR’s 23rd Foundation Day celebrations. It has been published in English, Konkani and Hindi.
“We can distribute these comics when students come to our campus. Even if one of them gets interested in Polar Sciences, it will be a great feat,” Dr Meloth said.
The comic strip has been authored by NCPOR scientists Dr Abhilash Nair and Dr Ravidas Krishna Naik. It covers topics such as Polar Ice Studies, Antarctic Lake Investigations, Antarctic Operations, Southern Ocean Biology and Arctic Studies.
“In this comic book, we have shown a student asking questions such as what is NCPOR, what kind of activities we do, why we do it and the answers are given in a very simple language, so that the children can understand easily,” the NCPOR Director said.
Group Director and Scientist F (Polar Sciences), NCPOR, Dr Rahul Mohan said that there is a need to take Polar Sciences to the masses.
“Polar regions are very critical as they are directly connected with Earth’s climate. It is important that every person understands its importance. The comic book will play an important role in creating awareness amongst the masses,” Dr Mohan said.
