MARGAO: Even after delaying to act on the major pollution issue for the last 25 years, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has once again asked for two weeks time to file reply pertaining to the pollution of Salpem Lake fields.
As informed by the petitioner in the High Court Antonio Alvares, and a resident of Navelim, the pollution of Salpem Lake fields has badly affected the farming community.
It is pertinent to note that the Goa Pollution Control Board had issued direction to the civic body to desilt the highly polluted Salpem Lake and forthwith stop the discharge of untreated sewage into the lake in 2009. However, the Margao municipality is yet to work out the plans to act upon.
Recently, Antonio Alvares at the public meeting held at Navelim had highlighted the issue and appealed to the locals to unitedly fight to protect the environment and the Salpem Lake and fields from the destruction due to sewage water.
As claimed by Navelim residents neither the Margao civic body has plugged discharge of sewage into neither the lake nor the health department has verified the capacity and structural fitness of the septic tanks of the nearby housing complexes.
