MARGAO: Most of the Margao City Fathers played truant on World Environment Day as the Civic body observed the day with a rally around the Municipal garden on ‘Go Green’ on Thursday.
While school students carrying placards and shouting slogans participated in the rally, only a handful of City Fathers made their presence felt at the Municipal garden. Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, his deputy Dadi Mayemkar, ex-chairperson Dayanand Deulkar and Councillors Raju Naik and Sangeeta Audi made it to the Municipal garden on time at 9 am to join the students and Chief Officer Y B Tawde at the rally.
That’s not all. Though the Director of Municipal Administration Elvis Gomes had last month told the media that the Margao Civic body would kick off its door-to-door waste collection programme from July 1 with an awareness campaign on World Environment Day, the rally was restricted only to the Municipal garden. Contrary to expectations, the rally made no mention of the proposed door-to-door waste collection scheme.
Chairperson Gonzaco, however, said that the door-to-door campaign has not been initiated yet by the civic body as certain issues remain unresolved till date. “The civic body would go ahead with the scheme only when the DMA clarifies on the engagement of workers to put the scheme in place. Unless the civic body is permitted to engage workers to collect waste door-to-door, the scheme may not take off in the city,” Gonzaco said.
