Fishermen from Betul have voiced strong opposition to the proposed dredging of the Betul River and adjoining Arabian Sea, warning that the project would threaten their livelihoods and damage the region’s fragile marine ecosystem.
According to members of the fishing community, dredging could destroy sea shell beds that serve as a vital source of income for many families in Betul. They argued that similar dredging work had been carried out in the past, but the river and coastal stretch eventually silted up again, rendering the exercise ineffective.

Instead of dredging, the fishermen have urged the government to construct a retaining wall, which they believe would provide a more sustainable and long-term solution for protecting the river and coastline.
The villagers also called on the government to consult local residents before implementing any major development project in the area. They alleged that decisions affecting their livelihoods are being taken without adequate public consultation.
Warning of protests if their concerns are ignored, the fishermen said they would stage a “gharane” in front of Rakhandar Khani Dev if the dredging project proceeds despite widespread opposition. They appealed to the Fisheries Minister to reconsider the proposal in view of its potential impact on the fishing community.
The fishermen further demanded that the annual fishing ban be extended from the existing two months to three months across the entire Arabian Sea belt. They said a longer fishing ban would allow sufficient time for fish breeding, leading to healthier fish stocks, improved catches after the ban is lifted, and enhanced safety for fishermen during the monsoon season.
In addition, the fishing community highlighted a shortage of staff in the fisheries sector, claiming that inadequate manpower has adversely affected the delivery of services and support to fishermen. They urged the government to address the staffing issue to ensure the effective functioning of the department and better assistance for coastal communities.
