MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club edged past Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem 6-5 via the tie-breaker to cruise into the quarter-finals of 37th all-Goa Cana Benaulim inter-village football tournament organized by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association at St John de Baptist ground, Benaulim, Monday. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation period.
In an exciting first half the teams displayed attacking football and kept the crowds on their toes. Crossing over, Navelim put up an improved performance and threatened the rival citadel with well orchestrated raids. They finally broke the deadlock after striker Alvito Colaco bulged the rival nylons off a pass from Gerson Pereira.
Down by a goal, Guardian Angel got their act together and neutralized the lead midway as Benny Olveira slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot off a well-measured pass from Patrick Lima.
In the final quarter, the teams went all-out in search of the match-winner but their defenders stood rock solid.
In the penalty shoot-out, Navelim kept their cool as Wellington Silva, Allister Gomes, Gerson Pereira, Roval Gomes and Milroy Coutinho scored while Jovial Coutinho, Mansuh Olveira, Anthony Dias and Romeo Colaco converted for Guardian Angel.
