SANGUEM: With the government twisting its arms all over again to get the controversial IIT project at Sanguem after its failure on the first count, the local farming community supported by green activists are getting geared up for the second round of agitation if the government fails to scrap the project on its own and get it shifted elsewhere.

President of Farmers Association, Constancio Mascarenhas questioned the motives of Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai for getting the project back in Sanguem when infact the chapter was closed during the tenure of Prasad Gaonkar.
“Why is Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai in a hurry to push the project in Sanguem when it was rejected elsewhere by environment-conscious people,” questioned Mascarenhas.
Speaking to Herald, Mascarenhas informed that the project will do more harm than good to the people of Sanguem. He said “We had placed our objections before the government and other concerned authorities during the first round of our agitation. I do not see any reason behind the authorities getting the project back to Sanguem except for the one-up political status Phaldessai is enjoying in the ruling government.”
Mascarenhas threatened to take the agitation to new heights if the government fails to reconsider its decision of dumping the project on the people in Sanguem.
He further said that though Phaldessai presented a rosy picture of the advantages the people of Sanguem would be enjoying if the project gets its clearance, it is not so, claimed Mascarenhas.
“The proposed employment avenues made available at the campus site are all fictitious. The employment rate of non-Goans at the project would always remain over 90 to 95 per cent and only a negligible percentage of 2 to 5 per cent of the jobs would be offered to Goans,” Mascarenhas asserted.
