PORVORIM: Cumbharjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar has come down heavily on the government citing poor road infrastructure at majority locations despite the Transport Department earning a whopping Rs 400 crore every year.
Speaking on the floor of the House, the Congress legislator asked the government to not only spend the earnings on the road and related developments to curb accidents but also introduce traffic rules from school level.
“On an average there is one accident in the State daily. We have lost so many lives and seen many grievously injured in accidents. The transport department earns Rs 400 crore per annum. Why can’t it spend the money on the safety of commuters and to improve the road engineering?” he said.
Madkaikar thereafter urged the government not to take the issue casually and instead work towards the safety of commuters and vehicle users.
Speaking on the ongoing work along the Panjim-Old Goa bypass road, Madkaikar raised apprehensions whether over 60 houses located along Banastari will be demolished. “The work is currently stopped because there is no permission obtained but once done, will the people lose their houses in the process of widening of roads? The residents are worried,” he said.
The minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar told the opposition leader that permissions are yet to be obtained to begin the stalled work while hinting that there won’t be losses to masses.
