PORVORIM: Stating that state is 75% closer to achieve 24/7 water supply, Minister of Public Works Department (PWD) Sudin Dhavalikar said there is no shortage of water in Goa whereas it happens due to the lack of storage system in the households.
He said that the department gives minimum 7 hours water to domestic consumers whereas they don’t have the storage system to store the water and in sloppy areas the water cannot be supplied more than that.
Minister Dhavalikar appealed to allow the department to increase water fare by 50 paisa at initial slab and Rs 1 to further slab so that water tanks can be supplied to all the people who don’t have the reservoir at home.
“I am giving the tanks to each and everyone who needs it, it will help in tackling the shortage of water,” the Minster said.
Speaking further he said that govt has decided to take work of Rs 800 cr to improve the water supply network, the funds of which have asked from the centre.
Minister said that people should stop using the potable water to even wash the vehicles and gardening. “People should not take advantage of the cheap tariff which state is giving,” he said.
“We are the number one state to supply potable and filter water supply with computerised billing system” Dhavalikar said.
“We feel that government should give free water supply but somewhere the people should know the importance of it and reason why the tariff is important on it,” he added.
Dhavalikar said that department has taken the work of refurbishing all the plants across state. He said that once 100 MLD plant at Selaulim is ready the old plant of 220 MLD will be taken for the refurbishing.
Stating power cut is another reason for major hurdle in the water supply, Minister Dhavalikar said that two minutes of power failure wastes 45 minutes of the plant which causes inconvenience to the general public as production time lapses.
