PANJIM: Organisers of Electronic Dance
Music Festival (EDM) Sunburn have applied before the Goa Coastal Zone
Management Authority (GCZMA) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for
permission to hold the festival. The annual four-day festival is scheduled to start
on December 27.
In an application moved before GCZMA,
permission has been sought under Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification
1991 and under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and Water (Prevention
and Control of Pollution) Act before the GSPCB.

GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha
confirmed receiving the application. He, however, made it clear that consent
would be granted only after the organisers obtain the required permissions from
the departments of Tourism and Home and GCZMA.
Interestingly, the GCZMA expert
committee, in its special report before the government in May, this year, had
said “no” to holding such big events on the Candolim beach belt, where Sunburn
is held every year, attracting lakhs of visitors from across the world.
“The
holding of mega-festivals along the coastal areas of Goa in December 2014 has
taught us certain lessons,” they observed after conducting a detailed site
inspection.
GCZMA was
of the view that the site at Candolim cannot be rented out for a commercial
event of such large magnitude event as the area constitutes a sand dune
complex, classified as CRZ I, where no activity can be permitted.
