MAPUSA: Human Rights Defenders, on Monday, alleged Mapusa Municipal Council of making Rs 80 lakh in a scam involving Sopo Tax contract.
HRD President Advino Fernandes claimed that MMC has not formed a Town Vending Committee as per the Goa Street Vendors Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Rules 2016.
According to Advino MMC has 608 vendors registered in the Mapusa market and the tax collection amounts to Rs 1.36 cr.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar  said, “We have followed all the rules and the correct procedure for the sopo contract. The final amount is frozen for this year and it amounts to Rs 1.36  crore.” Fernandes said that when HRD asked details of the town vending committee through RTI, the Municipal office provided them false info about implementation of Town Vending Committee.
with a list of only 11 members while the Act says the panel should comprise 20.
