PERNEM: Tuem farmers on Thursday threatened to hold protest if the government failed to compensate them for their land.
Reacting to the statement made by IT Minister Rohan Khaute that as per the Alvara Act, the farmers cannot be compensated, the farmers warned,” If there is no provision then such provision should be made by the government.”

“If the government can make changes in the Town and Country Planning Act then why not in Alvara Act,” Uday Mandrekar, panch of Tuem Village Panchayat and farmers claimed.
“Local MLA Jit Arolkar should stand by his promise he had made prior to the Assembly elections that the farmers who have lost their land for the Electronic City will be given justice. This is 6,500 lakh sq mts land, which is not a small area. The government has now made plots and selling them for Rs 1,200 per sq mt. The government has fixed the rate of land at Rs 1,200 per sq mt, then why the farmers cannot be compensated. It’s the land of the farmers where they had cashew plantations and other fruit bearing trees on which they were surviving,” Mandrekar said.
“The government should re-think on this and make necessary provision to compensate the farmers. We want justice and for that we won’t even hesitate to agitate,” Mandrekar warned in the presence of former sarpanch Nilesh Kandolkar.
