SGPDA market waste dumped by roadside irks Madel, Fatorda locals

Citing hygiene and environmental issues, residents want garbage removed immediately

MARGAO: The residents of Fatorda expressed concerns about the dumping of garbage and fish waste from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority market by the roadside in the vicinity of the Old Market Circle, citing hygiene and environmental issues.

They complained that despite ongoing cleaning operations within the market and in the vicinity of the retail fish market, the same garbage is being dumped outside the complex, subsequently littered just outside the SGPDA complex, along the roadside, leading to widespread mess.

The residents of Madel too have raised concerns about health hazards due to accumulated garbage and have demanded the same be removed immediately.

The garbage was dumped on a designated footpath, despite its intended use.

Milagres Fernandes, a resident, demanded prompt removal of the garbage to ensure the health and safety of residents and pedestrians.

“It poses a significant threat to the health and safety of residents, pedestrians, and motorists alike. There is a potential health hazard due to the accumulation of waste. Hence the site could turn into a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he said. He alleged that the dumping of garbage has been carried out illegally; disregarding the inconvenience caused to the general public.

Cedrick Pereira, another resident, accused the authorities of engaging in causing nuisance by dumping the waste and other material along the roadside, and expressed frustration over the disregard for public cleanliness and the negative impact it has on the locals.

“This is totally irresponsible behaviour of the authorities. Such things are unacceptable,” said Pereira.
