Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has rejected US President Donald Trump’s newly announced economic pressure campaign against Tehran, describing it as a continuation of failed policies that would lead to further defeat for Washington.
Araghchi, in a post on X on Thursday, said Trump’s so-called “Economic D-Day” was an attempt to divert attention from the United States’ own economic challenges, including high debt and rising interest costs. He also accused Washington of pursuing “economic terrorism” that threatens the global economy and the sovereignty of countries worldwide.
Trump had announced the campaign on Truth Social, describing it as the “most crushing economic operation” ever imposed on a country. He warned that nations, financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities that provide economic support to Iran could face severe consequences.
The US administration has said the new measures are intended to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and isolate Iran from global financial and trading networks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said further details of the sanctions package are expected to be announced next week.
The latest escalation comes amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran, with diplomatic efforts to ease the confrontation remaining stalled. Iran has rejected the US strategy, while Washington has indicated that it intends to rely increasingly on economic pressure rather than military action.
