PORVORIM: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that the third Mandovi Bridge was being constructed to reduce traffic jams and air pollution, and the same was a need of the hour.
Criticising environmentalists for opposing every project, he said “Environmentalists also objected to setting up a garbage treatment plant at Saligao plateau. If the garbage plant is not set up, how will the garbage problem be solved? There has to be a change in the mindset of people.”
Parrikar was speaking at the inauguration of the new Mapusa municipal building, which once housed St Mary’s Convent High School, on Tuesday.
Stating that parking is a major problem in Mapusa, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar urged the Mapusa Municipal Council to ensure that builders had demarcated parking spaces in buildings before granting them construction licences. He added that there was a need to renovate the comunidade building.
Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza announced that projects worth Rs 200 crore were being undertaken in Mapusa, presently. He also urged municipalities to generate revenue and stand on their feet instead of depending on funds from the government.
