Deputy Sarpanch Chandrakant Gaonkar said it was the first time they witnessed water flowing over the bridge. The water levels rose suddenly, after around four hours of continuous rainfall in the taluka. It was only after the water receded after two hours, that the villagers and the vehicular traffic could cross
the bridge.
Gaonkar said that the force of the water was such that a huge mango tree came crashing down and got stuck to one side of the bridge, further affecting the flow of water.
An earth-mover machine called to remove the mango tree returned without undertaking the job as it was not feasible for the JCB machine to clear the huge tree. Fire brigade personnel were also unable to remove the massive trunk and debris from the tree. The sudden rain also led to agricultural damage, and flattened several paddy fields which were about to be harvested in Netravali and Bhati villages.
