PANJIM: After three fire incidents at Taleigao’s garbage dump reported within a month, two fire incidents were reported in a field on Saturday. The Fire Control Room received two emergency calls on 12:24 pm and later at 3.06 pm informing about huge flames at the same place.
“The fire incidents were reported in the field, opposite Skoda car showroom. Somebody had set fire to the dry grass. Two fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames. Thereafter, at around 3:06pm we received another call about the same, for which we required one fire tender to control the flames,” fire personnel said.
Neither the Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services nor the Panjim police have so far received formal complaint against any person/s involved in this activity.
“The act is causing damage to the environment, creating nuisance and endangering life of living beings. As far as information to the police is concerned, no permission was sought to set fire to the huge quantum of grass. It could have led to casualty. If a complaint is filed, we will immediately register an FIR and seek the custody of the accused,” a police official said.
In the recent past, huge dumps of garbage was engulfed in fire at Taleigao on three separate occasions, giving a tough time to the fire fighters to douse the flames. The Goa State Pollution Control Board took cognizance of the matter and issued notice to the Taleigao village panchayat for pollution. The panchayat was also slapped with fine of Rs 25,000.
