MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is all set to inaugurate the first biomethanation plant of 5 TPD on Wednesday, installed at South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) retail market, hoping to resolve the wet waste menace.

According to MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira, the plant will be run by Urja Biosystem Pvt Ltd, Pune and has already had a successful trial for the last few days.
The plant will be inaugurated by Minister for Urban Development Milind Naik in the presence of Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, SGPDA Chairman and Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, besides other officials.
It may be noted that the civic body is facing a tough time in order to tackle the issue of garbage since the last several decades. No treatment of waste at Sonsoddo has created a major problem even to the residents of Margao and surrounding areas.
Recently, Herald had also highlighted how the garbage of SGPDA markets was collected and dumped in the fields and later burned, leading to air pollution in the locality.
The SGPDA market is considered as the bulk waste generator on a daily basis including wet waste. The plant is installed near the fish cutters shed in the retail fish market.
