MARGAO: South Goa Planning and Development Authority’s (SGPDA) retail fish market vendors once again urged the authority to initiate action against the fish vendors carrying out business beyond the given time at the wholesale fish market, as they accused the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) of failing to crack whip on these vendors on a regular basis.

On the request of retail fish market vendors, SGPDA has decided to write to the MMC to take stern action against the illegal fish sale outside the wholesale fish market complex, said SGPDA chairman Wilfred D’Sa.
It is pertinent to note that fish vending is not allowed after 9 am in the wholesale fish market. However, several fish vendors are found conducting business outside the wholesale fish market, besides sitting on the roadside till afternoon. Earlier, on a few occasions MMC cracked the whip on illegal fish vendors and others selling goods, including vegetables. But the civic body failed to continue its action against illegalities at the wholesale fish market.
Speaking to media persons Wilfred D’Sa said SGPDA has received a memorandum from the retail fish market vendors, urging them to crack whip on the illegal fish sale at the wholesale fish market.
“SGPDA has not allowed any fish sale activity in the wholesale fish market beyond 9 am. We have noticed, and even retail fish traders have alleged that several vendors sell fish after 9 am but outside the wholesale fish market, wherein we have no jurisdiction”, he said.
A vendor from the retail fish market threatened that the vendors will be forced to take the law into their hands if the concerned authorities fail to initiate action against the illegal activity.
