Turtle hatchlings rescued on Cavelossim beach

MARGAO: Turtle hatchlings found on Cavelossim beach were rescued by locals and promptly handed over to the forest department. Travis Aguiar, proprietor of a restaurant at Cavelossim spotted the turtles and surprised locals claimed that this was one of the first cases of turtle sighting on the beach.

While local residents took care of the turtles before the range forest officers were called in, they called for a survey to be conducted on the beach stretch to confirm if there were more such sightings. Sources added that the animal rescue team from South Goa had been called in to give medical attention to the animals.
Locals further suspected that the turtles could hatch on the beach and that there was a need to probe the matter and identify the nesting sites if any and put in steps to protect that area. It is to be noted that the main nesting beaches in Goa are at Morjim, Mandrem and Kerim in North Goa; Galgibaga and Agonda in South Goa. The turtle conservation programme appears to be going strong, as the forest department has protected a total of 16 nests in Agonda and Galgibaga.
