In his bid to accomplish his goal he did not mind clipping the wings of even some strong men for anti-party activities. He apparently might have overshot his limits in trying to discipline some senior-most Congress stalwarts that could have weighed heavily against him.
No one can deny that in politics the thing that matters most is expediency. Rarely one’s disciplined approach and ruthlessly clinging to principles will be adored and glorified. Success would come to those who are in the habit of gauging the pulse around and take convenient decisions to match the situation of the day.
If not we would not have so many unholy alliances being stitched between parties of varying ideologies whose leaders were sworn enemies for decades. Moreover, how can you justify that despite having criminal cases filed against so many parliamentarians of worst nature, they still continue to enjoy the party’s blessings? Irrespective of this party or that, in Indian politics, what matters the most is who can garner votes and make the party win.
Discipline, principles, ideology are great words that you and I may hold in high esteem but they tend to flout political battlefield. Can you imagine that our former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who was even nicknamed maun (silent) Mohan, for his total silence in public life, once unequivocally uttered that there are no permanent friends or foes in politics. That in a nutshell should pave way to realize how fluid the political platform is and success comes to those who van navigate shrewdly therein!
