PANJIM: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya claimed “family raj politics” not only strangled democracy at the Centre but also in various States and that only when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, that the youth started to reconnect with the political landscape of India.

Surya, who was speaking at the National Youth Parliament (NYP) named the families of Gandhi, Abdullah, Pawar, YSR, Gowda, Karunanidhi , Yadav (both in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) etc as examples of those who ensured politics were run not by political parties but by private companies.
He said this had left the youth disenchanted and disinterested in politics. Surya added that it was PM Modi who encouraged self-made persons having no political background to become leaders. Pointing out that Modi was first a “chaiwalla” and then the PM, he described other BJP leaders like Pramod Sawant who became a Chief Minister at a young age. Surya added that he himself became an MP at the age of 28.
Surya’s speech also underlined the need for youngsters to cast their vote in the elections and he said whenever there was increased poll participation from the youth, BJP always won.
He emphasised that every vote count and how the public voted BJP to power, because of which, long-pending issues were solved, such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Surya, like the others who spoke later including Sawant, took digs at political rivals, especially those from other States.
He spoke about how before the elections in Karnataka, political parties promised pilgrimages and even went on pilgrimages and were under the impression that they would get votes but in the end the people voted for BJP itself.
There were other BJP MPs that also spoke at NVP such as Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Jamyang Tsering Namgyal who praised what the BJP government had done. The same was the case with others like Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi and former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu.
While Padma Vibhushan Dr Sonal Mansingh was the guest of honour for the inauguration, international youth leader Gaur Gopal Das was the chief guest for the valedictory function. Goa’s icon Sonia Sonia Shirsat was also one of the key speakers.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister then gave a detailed listing of all the schemes and achievements of the BJP government at the State and Central level. He spoke about how there are over 200 public schemes for the public and how the government had spent over Rs 250 crore for the development of sports infrastructure.
He also stressed upon how the government has taken measures to develop Goa as an education hub and named the various institutes and types of courses that are available in Goa; colleges and private universities coming to Goa; and all the technical training offered to students to enhance their skills.
