Leaseholders express inability to pump water from closed mining pits

PANJIM: Iron ore mining leaseholders have expressed their inability to pump water from the closed mining pits for drinking and irrigation purposes of those living in the mining villages, as directed by the District Magistrate.
Around ten lease holders on Monday appeared before the DM North stating that since mining operations are closed and they have no right to enter the lease site, they are not in position to continue pumping water.
The DM had issued show cause notices to the leaseholders for failing to pump water. Sources said that the magistrate will issue appropriate orders in the matter shortly.
The District Magistrate’s order had said that stopping of pumping of water may deprive the villagers of regular supply of drinking water.
