PANJIM: Youth from Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol beach belt have decided to launch a massive awareness campaign against the rampant sale of drugs in the area.
Under the banner of Mandre Vikas Manch, the youth are being led by Sachin Parab, son of former minister Sangeeta Parab to carry out the campaign against the drug menace. “A group of 50 youth will visit households and establishment in the area making people aware about the drugs. People would be given an option of calling helpline if anyone is found selling drugs. We will inform authorities and youth will ensure that the trade is stopped,” Parab said.
The Manch has got together all the likeminded people in the area, which is also constituency of Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. Parab said the youth have decided that enough is enough.
“Recently Herald carried news on the front page exposing everything. If a journalist can know these facts, how come police are unaware about it? It is clear that the people in power are not interested in weeding out narcotics,” he said.
The locals have been raising the issue about the increasing drug trade in the area during gram sabha meetings. “But nothing happens. We have not decided to act and make sure that the difference is made,” he continued. He said the locals are frustrated over things that are happening here in the name of tourism. “We want clean tourism. Without drugs people will come to our constituency as we have renowned beaches,” he added.
