SANGUEM: The sugarcane farmer’s agitation in Sanguem which entered its fourth day on Tuesday, is likely to head to some conclusion today, Wednesday when the farmer’s delegation hold a meeting with the Chief Minister and other top government officials in Panjim.
On Tuesday, the Sanguem Deputy Collector Ajay Gaude spoke to the Deputy Chief Minister. He then conveyed the government’s proposal to the farmers of providing Rs 3,600 per tonne as compensation to standing crops as demanded by the farmers and also to complete the full payment by the end of February.

Gaude also informed the agitators that the written assurance towards payment of compensation would be provided to the farmers by the factory officials. The farmer’s demand that isn’t being considered the government is the payment of compensation of Rs 3,600 per tonne based on the highest average of sugarcane supplied by individual farmers to the Sanjivani Sugar Factory over the last ten years. However, this has been a major demand of the farmers.
Gaude informed that farmers that the government committee on this, has invited the farmer’s delegation to Panjim to discuss and arrive at some conclusion on this demand, which remains unfulfilled.
Incidentally, though the farmers were initially not satisfied with the plan of the delegation heading to Panjim to discuss the issue, it appears that they will end up attending the same. However, their agitation will continue in Sanguem till the time all the demands are fulfilled and the government gives its acceptance in writing.
It is also to be noted that on Tuesday, various political leaders from the State including Digambar Kamat, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Pratima Coutinho addressed the agitation and pledged their support to the sugarcane cultivators.
MLA Kamat said the issue of Sanjivani Sugar Factory will be discussed at length at the forthcoming assembly session.
