PANJIM: Goa may be a preferred holiday destination for young foreigners but they don’t favour the coastal State as much, when it comes to pursuing their higher education. International students are inclined more towards States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2018-19, which was released last week, Goa, with hardly 0.5 % foreign student enrollment, is just above North Eastern States like Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura for the least number of foreign students opting for higher studies.
Data reveals that during the period, a total of 47,427 students from 117 foreign countries cleared their studies in India, of which 248 were in Goa. The number of male foreign students (202) is higher in number as compared to the small number of female students (46).
A total of 17 foreign students, 15 male and two female, opted for post- graduation, while three (two male and one female) went for PhD. Similarly, there were a total of 225 undergraduates that consist of 182 male and 43 female students.
No foreign student went for a diploma or PG diploma course, unlike States like Haryana, Karnataka, and Punjab, where hundreds of student took admissions in such courses. There are three students who went for certificate courses.
Students from Japan, Fiji, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Iraq, South Africa, and France are enrolled in various courses in Goa University and its affiliated colleges in the State.
