Special team to keep eye on shady deals at Sada

GHRDC’s men in green to balance shortfall of guards, ensure three layered security

HEADLAND SADA: In a bid to prevent sneaking of banned products inside the notorious Sada sub jail in Mormugao, the inspector general of prisons has deployed a special team of 20 personnel attached to Goa Human Resource Development Corporation (GHRDC) at the sub jail. This team has been given powers on par with the jail guards and besides performing jail duties will keep a close watch on all activities.
Jail guards at the sub jail were under suspicion after Herald in an exclusive report exposed how various banned products are sneaked inside the jail giving prisoners comforts and the jail getting nicknamed ‘five star jail’ where facilities are available on payment of an extra charge.
“It was recently decided to utilise the services of GHRDC to balance the shortfall of jail guards at the jail. The presence of 20 GHRDC security personnel will also bring some discipline amongst the jail guards. This will ensure that the jail will now have a three-layered security including IRB, jail guards and GHRDC,” a senior jail official told Herald.
According to jail officials, these men in green (GHRDC security) have been given responsibility of the jail’s main entrance. “These people have been told not to take orders from the jail guards and to ensure that no banned product is sneaked inside the jail so that the past is not repeated,” the official said.
Sources inside Sada sub jail confirmed to Herald that the use of mobile phones by inmates has been curtailed to an extent. However tobacco products and cigarettes are still being sneaked in, but even this is not to the extent it was happening in past before it was stopped following the Herald expose.
