MARGAO: Former chairman of Margao Municipal Council and convener of Shadow Council for Margao Savio Coutinho, condemning the inordinate delay in registering births and deaths at the Sub-Registrar’s office at the MMC, said people are put to untold hardships due to the lethargic working of the staff.
Pointing out that there is a backlog of birth and death registrations pending since March this year he urged the council to spare some time to find a solution to this problem as people are put to hardships.
He said Catholics are forced to delay the baptism of their child due to the delay in getting the birth certificate issued and further said parents of girl child cannot avail of various schemes meant for the girl child as the birth certificate has to be submitted within a month of the child’s birth and the MMC issues birth certificate after two or more months.
Further, he pointed out that descendants of senior citizens run the risk of having a criminal case filed against them for not reporting the death of the senior citizen availing government pension within a month of the death as the death certificate is issues after two or three months.
Savio noted that those having contacts with higher officials can get their certificates issues promptly.
while for the common man it is just a long wait. “We wonder if this situation is deliberately done so that public should approach the higher authorities and the authorities in turn show as if a favor is being done by issuing the much needed certificate”, Mr. Coutinho remarked.
He demanded that additional staff be deputed to clear the backlog and give relief to the patient public who have been bearing this sorry plight for too long.
