MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which calls itself ‘a party with a difference’, is still struggling to tell the people of Goa, its stand on two very sensitive, emotional and contentious issues – the Mopa airport and special status for Goa. While the Prime Minister has laid the foundation stone for the Mopa airport, AAP isn’t quite sure how to play this, because its Mandrem candidate Devendra Prabhudesai is a vocal proponent of the airport.
On the issue of special status too, AAP is at unease and unsure of what its stand should be, even as the BJP had rejected its own move to press for special status, saying it’s not practical. AAP has been unable to respond to this so far.
Speaking to Herald, AAP leader, Rajashree Nagarsekar (Chairperson, campaign panel) said AAP is not ready and has been having discussions to finalise its stand on Mopa airport, and special status. “Our stand on Mopa is not ready. Discussions are happening at the think-tank level. Officially, there is nothing from AAP on Mopa, but very soon we will declare our stand,” she said.
She added, “All these issues have been used by political parties to their own benefit by dividing the people. Our attempt is to get everybody together and get the best solution for Goa which may not be political but in the interest of Goa. Similarly, on the issue of special status, it is still under scrutiny and we are yet to finalise our opinion.”
These remarks assume significance since in Salcette, where AAP hopes to create the maximum electoral disruption, there are very clear views on both the issues. Salcette is against the Mopa airport and wants special status to be conferred upon Goa. But due to its inherent compulsions and contradictions, due to its attempts at making inroads in North Goa seats, it is unable to speak in one voice.
