MARGAO: In wake of the recent uproar over the road conditions in Margao, work on the repairing the same finally began on Thursday night.
Savio Coutinho of the Shadow Council for Margao who was supposed to stage a rasta roko on Friday, withdrew the same as the repairs of the roads had started and that assurances were given for all the other affected roads.
It may be recalled that on Thursday, the Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat had carried out an inspection with officials from various departments in the presence of Margao residents.
On Friday, Kamat issued a statement, appreciating the prompt action of the government to take up road repairs at Margao in response to his demand.
He was grateful that PWD carried out the work on Thursday night itself, working from 11:30 pm to 3:00 am.
He urged the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to ensure that all roads in Margao are attended to and asked the PWD Minister to concentrate on roads all over the State.
While stating that this was the first time in the last 30 years that Margao roads were so badly affected, he said if the roads all over Goa are not attended to, he will be forced to launch an agitation.
Ironically, the Bharatiya Janata Party in Margao had earlier promised to repair the roads before the commencement of the Ganesh festival.
While thanking Margao MLA for taking up the issue, Savio however demanded that the repairs should be carried out at the cost of the contractor without costing the department anything.
