The Lenten musical, ‘Redeemer’, that will
take place today evening, promises to be a musical extravaganza with forty
professional and amateur artistes and music by a 10-piece live band. All the 20
songs in the musical have been penned and set to music by the music teacher of
Fr Agnel High School, Placido Rodrigues with choreography by Sheryl Vaz. The
entire production has been conceptualised and guided by Fr Dominic Alvares,
with direction by Blossom Araujo.
“A lot of effort has been put to motivate
the artistes to make this musical a spiritual experience and to come closer to
the Lord and proclaim Him,” reveals Fr Alvares, who has also acted as a
resource person in theological and biblical matters.
Fr Alvares reveals the idea for the play
came into being when a few people approached him with a novel idea of a musical
during Lent and he encouraged them with the thought of providing something for
the English audience as there already are a number of Lenten tiatrs in Konkani.
Quoting Pope Leo the Great, Fr Alvares
animated the group, saying, “‘The passion of Christ can be effective in us if
we imitate what we receive and proclaim to others what we venerate.’ The most
important act on Good Friday is the veneration of the cross. This musical is
not mere acting and singing, but re-enacting and proclaiming the passion of
Christ,” he adds.
“The musical ‘Redeemer’ includes the story
of Jesus beginning from His public life right from the Baptism at Jordan, His
teachings and miracles before culminating in the death, passion and
resurrection,” informs music director Placido Rodrigues.
Some artistes in the musical troupe reveal
that by enacting the life of Christ, they have understood the Bible better and
it has indeed been a spiritual experience.
Recently, on the outskirts of Bangalore, in
a Catholic village, around 600 children enacted the life of Jesus in a play of
7-hour duration. Besides the regular exercise of the Way of the Cross carried
out in every parish during Lent, maybe every Goan village could dramatise the
life of Christ during the season of grace and help in the renewal of lives of
the parishioners.
This Lenten musical play will be staged at
Kala Academy on March 17 at 7.15pm, followed by another show at Ravindra
Bhavan, Margao on April 1 at 7.30pm
