SANGUEM: A prolonged dry spell has left thousands of visitors waiting to catch a panoramic glimpse of water overflowing from the Selaulim dam’s spillway.
Last year, the dam was filled to the brim and began to overflow on July 6, but the scenario this year is different. Due to poor monsoon so far, the dam is likely to take more time to get its vast reservoir filled with water. While a minimum depth of 42 metres is needed to fill the dam’s reservoir, the present water level at the dam has barely reached the 33-metre mark along its reservoir. A large number of people make it a point to visit the Selaulim dam during the monsoon to watch the water gushing down the dam’s spillway. Except for 2012 when the water began to overflow only on August 14, records maintained by the department since the last 13 years have revealed that the water has always been overflowing from the dam’s spillway in July.
