MAPUSA: Calangute Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said on Thursday that the BJP government has laid the ground work for destroying tourism in the State by proposing to declare 21 major district roads (MDRs) into National Highways.
Addressing a press conference, Sequeira said that after destroying mining, the BJP government turned its focus on destroying tourism in the State. He predicted that the proposal to declare Calangute roads as national highways would lead to the total destruction of tourism industry in the village, on which everyone in the village is dependent.
Claiming that the no government gave jobs to Calangute villagers, he said, “Only 31 government servants cast postal ballots.”
Recalling the promise of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar that he would provide jobs to Calangute villagers after coming to power, Sequeira claimed that after Parrikar came to power, even those who had government jobs lost them.“If this is the situation, then, what people will do (for their living)? If this road is declared as national highway, then, as per the Supreme Court order on liquor ban, it will affect the industry in Calangute,” he complained.
“We will not allow this to happen. We will oppose (conversion of Calangute roads into) national highways,” he vowed.
