Elderly man killed in accidental fire
MARGAO: A senior citizen aged 65 years Sarangvar M Pillay, retired government servant who was staying alone at government Junta Quarters died of burning when the bed mattress he was sleeping on suspected to have accidentally caught fire due to burning cigarette bud.
According to Margao police at around 9 pm on Saturday they received a call that smoke was emanating from Pillay’s residence and when police along with fire brigade personnel rushed to the quarters they found both front and back door locked and the fire brigade personnel had to break the door lock to enter the premises.
The deceased was found burnt to death on bed. Police suspect that a cigarette smoked by the deceased apparently left on the bed igniting the mattress and engulfing the deceased. No foul play is suspected by police and there was no major damage to the premises.
Tourism huts gutted at Patnem
CANACONA: A fire destroyed some tourism huts at Patnem beach on Saturday morning. Canacona fire services received a call at about 11.15 am and rushed to the site, but the huts were already damaged causing a loss of about Rs 60,000. Fire Services sources informed that the cause of fire is believed to be due to a short-circuit in the electrical wiring.
Navelim civic forum meeting
MARGAO: The Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum will have its monthly general meeting of consumers on Sunday at 10.45 am in Rosary High School classroom, Navelim. The controversy of Aadhaar (UID) number and so called Portuguese citizenship along with other regular consumer related issues of Post Office, PWD Water Supply, Goa Dairy Milk, Health, Road Safety & Traffic Management will be discussed.
Nuvem gram sabha
MARGAO: The Gram sabha of Nuvem village panchayat will be held on January 19 at 10 am at the Panchayat hall. Sarpanch Reuben Costa said the meeting will discuss the constitution of the village water and sanitation committee.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast
PANJIM: The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be celebrated on January 19 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Arambol. Masses will be at 7 am and 10 am. Fr Aleixo Menezes will be the main celebrant for the feast Mass at 10 am. The Youth will be organizing a 3-day Fete at the Church premises beginning with a Tiatr Festival.
Fr Agnelo’s birth anniversary
TIVIM: The 145th birth anniversary of Venerable Fr Agnelo will be observed at his Anjuna Gaumwaddy house and the chapel there on January 21.
Novenas began on January 12 and daily novena masses are being celebrated at 4.30 pm at the Gaumwaddy chapel.
On the feast day, the concelebrated feast Mass will be celebrated at 4.15 pm at the same chapel, and the main celebrant will be Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai Savio Fernandes, who traces his roots to Goa.
Besides Bishop Fernandes, other priests from Pilar will also be present at the feast Mass.

Volkswagen outlet opened in Margao
Mohite Automotive opened its new Volkswagen showroom in Margao. The first Volkswagen model (a red POLO Highline Petrol) from Margao outlet was delivered to Dr Maria Annette Vas from Chinchinim. Abhishek Mohite, MD of Mohite Automotive Pvt Ltd presented the car and a hamper to the customer.

Construction workers’ meet held
PANJIM: A meeting of the Goa Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board was held in the Conference Hall, Ministerial Block, Secretariat, Porvorim under the chairmanship of Labour Minister Avertano Furtado. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the employers, trade unions and independent members. Prominent among those who attended the meeting were D P Dwivedi, Anil Khaunte, Gaurang Sukhtanker, Christopher Fonseca, Puti Gaonkar and others. The board considered the report of the Advisory Committee and approved four schemes — payment of funeral assistance, payment of death benefit, medical assistance and maternity benefit for unregistered building workers. There was a strong plea to announce death benefit of Rs 2 lakh in case of accidental death. The chairman agreed to fix an amount of Rs 2 lakh to the dependents of deceased both registered and unregistered building worker. A scheme for building workers affected by disaster as occurred in Canacona was approved. Under the approved scheme prompt relief provision to the limit of Rs 10 lakh shall be made to the building workers affected by disaster/catastrophes or natural calamities. Modalities of relief shall be decided by a committee where there shall be no major procedural formalities.
Chronic pain management camp
PANJIM: A free camp on chronic pain management will be held on January 25 at A V Da Costa Memorial Clinic, near Fatorda stadium, Margao between 10 am and 12.30pm. Patients suffering from headache, migraine, neck pain, shoulder pain, backache, slipped disc pain, cancer pain, fibromyalgia, trigeminal neuralgia, knee pain, rheumatoid arthritis, pain after surgery for slipped disc etc will be examined at the camp.

‘Sevadhorm ani Jivit’ released
PANJIM: Fr Almir de Sousa of the Our Lady of Grace Church Madel-Chorao released his Konkani book ‘Sevadhorm ani Jivit’ on the occasion of his 80th birthday at Madel-Chorao on Friday.
The book was released at a largely attended function, which included family members, friends, villagers, well-wishers and parishioners, in the church compound.
A native of Saligao, Fr de Sousa has written 19 books in English and Konkani Script.
He had earlier served as Prefect of Saligao Seminary, Pro Notary in the Bishop’s House and secretary of the Diocesan Catechetical Centre, before serving as parish priest at St Estevam and Verna. He was also a former secretary to the Diocesan Commission for Liturgy and director of the Pastoral Institute. From there, he moved to St Elizabeth’s Church at Ucassaim and remained there till his retirement from active service. For a short time, he was at the Holy Cross Shrine, Bambolim and at present has been rending services at Our Lady of Grace Church in Maddel-Chorao.
